The ties that bind
Documenta as an event is always a daunting and exciting experience. The scale and the sheer volume of work exhibited and presented across the city of Kassel is paralleled with the mass of textual resources, seminar, talks, and screenings, it is monumental both physically and intellectually. Documenta creates and requires an intense and focused engagement. It is not, in my experience, for the faint hearted; it is and always has been more than a pleasurable jaunt. It is intellectually challenging, socially and politically charged, accented toward what the individual pieces offer in context of the themes or curatorial briefs which have traditionally gone beyond the ‘token gesture’ and addresses wider concerns rather than surveying fashionable aesthetics. This year there is a very real sense of the works and event as a whole attempting to ‘make sense’of global, political and cultural shifts.
