WHAT’S ART GOT TO DO WITH IT?
The last Documenta took place five years ago. Since then a war took place. An insidious war, whose devastation continues, fervently fostered by the democracies that instigated it. How can there be a space for dissent in a 360 view of normalised killing cushioned by world politics, global markets and the media? Can the artworld impact, in altering the premises that validate genocide in the name of democracy? Can this be done beyond a stance of manifested dissent, where ‘j’accuse’ is reduced to parody, satire or mere ‘controversy’ Ultimately, are there any ‘spaces’, be they institutional or social, where these practices can corrode the gleeful patina of self-serving post-industrial expansion?
